Erik Armstrong Explorer Unit reports
Chris Wright reports that Explorer Scouts at Erik Armstrong ESU made the most of the recent Half Term school break.
On the water, Maeve Crocker earned her RYA level 3 sailing qualification and Maxwell Wright earned his RYA powerboat level 2 qualification, whilst Isabel Wright and Libby Knowles both earned their British Canoeing Paddlesports Instructor Awards, all organised by the National RN Sea Scouts with funding from the Royal Navy.
On the land, 4 of our Explorers experienced wild camping on Dartmoor whilst 5 Explorers took part in a Mountaineering Weekend in Snowdonia, both organised by GLSW County, whilst 8 Explorers had a spooky time at the Fright Night Camp at Thriftwood Scout Campsite in Essex enjoying a haunted house as well as archery, tomahawk throwing, climbing, crate staking and the cresta run.
Q: If all the Explorer Units in the District are named after a famous explorer, who on earth was Erik Armstrong?
The Explorer Unit continues to go from strength to strength, now meeting on Thursday evenings and Saturday Mornings at the Petersham & Ham Sea Scout Group in Petersham. We offer a full land and water based programme including DofE and Top Awards as well as the Young Leader Scheme. For Membership enquiries, please email explorers@pandh.org.uk
A: The Erik Armstrong Unit was formed by a merger of two former Explorer Units – Erik the Red and (Neil) Armstrong. So now we have moonwalking Vikings!
