Beavers Air Activities at Brooklands

Date: 22nd May 2025 Author: Sarah Kershaw

Our Beavers recently had an exciting and action-packed day out at the Brooklands Museum, where they explored the fascinating world of planes, cars, buses, and bikes — all while working towards their Air Activities Badge.

The highlight for many was the chance to step inside real, decommissioned commercial airplanes. The Beavers were wide-eyed as they explored the cabin, peeked out of passenger windows, and sat where real pilots once flew across the globe. The view from the cockpit sparked their imaginations — one group even “flew” to Portugal to visit their favourite footballer!

Outside, we admired the sleek and iconic Concorde, and spirited debates followed: Did Concorde really fly from London to New York in just 2.5 hours? Or was it 3? Inside the flight shed, we discovered all kinds of aircraft, but our top pick was the Hawker Hunter — Britain’s most successful post-war fighter jet.

As part of the Air Activities Badge, the Beavers also learned about the NATO phonetic alphabet and the importance of clear voice communication when flying. It was a great way to tie learning into hands-on experience.

We didn’t stop with planes — the Beavers also visited the London Bus Museum, home to the world’s largest collection of working historic London buses, covering over 100 years of transport history. From an 1870s horse-drawn bus to cutting-edge electric models, it was a journey through time!

Another big hit was the full-size LEGO McLaren 720S supercar — built entirely out of LEGO bricks! The Beavers even got a chance to get creative with their own LEGO builds, combining engineering and imagination.

It was a fantastic day full of learning, laughter, and adventure — a perfect reflection of the Beaver Scout spirithaving fun with friends while discovering the world around us.
