Explorers – Go for DofE Gold!

Date: 8th Sep 2019 Author: Peter Tomlin

Aged 16+? It’s time to sign up for next year’s Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award training and expeditions.

Training for walking expeditions starts in the Autumn term. Any Explorers who are 16 years or over are eligible to start working towards their Gold Award. The expedition element of the award is run by Ian Tombleson (County Top Awards Commissioner) and his team.

There will be training during October half term from 23-26 October 2019 at the County base, Bethesda, in North Wales. The cost of the training is £85. Please note, you also attend the pre-meet on Sunday 22 September, Southwood Scout centre KT5 9NA from 2.30-4.30pm. You can sign up here for the training weekend https://www.trybooking.co.uk/LPG Please do so as soon as possible as there are limited places available.

There will also be a practice expedition in the Easter holidays (this year was a week in the Yorkshire Dales costing £125) and a qualifying expedition in the summer of 2020 (this year was  a week in Wales during the last week of the school holidays costing £125).

We would recommend completing Gold DofE and then ‘topping up’ to the Queen’s Scout Award. With a bit of effort, you should be able to complete you Gold DofE in time for your university/apprenticeship/job applications! You have until your 25th birthday to complete these awards but we’re finding year 12 at school is the perfect time to get the expedition done.

As soon as you turn 16 you can register for the Gold DofE award (costs £32) at this link  https://www.glswscouts.org.uk/spage-activities-duke_of_edinburgh__039_s_award.html If you register as soon as you’re 16 your activities (volunteering, physical and skill) will start counting. If you’re already registered for Silver and you haven’t completed the award, please talk to us before you register for Gold.

You’ll need to volunteer for 12 months and of the physical and skill sections, one will take you 6 months and the other 12 months to complete if you hold a Silver Award. If you don’t hold the DofE Silver Award, you’ll be expected to add 6 months to one of your 12 month sections so one section will take you 18 months. This is why we’d recommend registering asap if you didn’t do Silver DofE!

There is a requirement for a residential as part of the Gold DofE/QSA and this must be with people you don’t already know. If you’ve signed up for the NCS programme, this can count as your residential.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.
