Scout skills for leaders kick off

Date: 25th Jul 2021 Author: Peter Tomlin

We can’t all be Steve Backshall battling the elements in the wilderness but Scout Leaders need to practice the same skills and pass these onto the next generation.

Leaders across the District have embarked on a series of workshops on Scouting skills – delivered by other leaders – with the first successful one held on 24 July on firelighting and maintenance.

Our District Training Manager is regularly informed by new leaders and helpers that they need training on “core” scouting/outdoor skills as well as guidance on running activities, specifically options/ideas for instructing those skills across the Scouting age range.

More details on forthcoming skills training – including cooking using open fires  and using knives, saws and axes – are available to existing Scout leaders via the training dates page which can be found here (log-in details required). These pilot sessions will run until early September and we are looking to expand this idea so that sessions are run regularly throughout the year.

If you’ve some time and energy to give to Scouting within Scout Groups (ages 8-14) or Explorer Units (ages 14-17) across the District, you too could be learning new Scouting skills, click here to access our “Volunteer with Us” page.
