….for Day Prowl 2024

The last Day Prowl was held in 2018, so with Covid and cancellations due to events outside our control, we were looking forward to this annual friendly competition between teams of Scouts, Guides, Explorers, Rangers – and for the first time, a Network team.

What did we do differently from previous Day Prowl events?

Out

  • old rules about points
  • not knowing where lost teams might be
  • teams needing to await (what seemed hours) for collection at bases at the end of the day
  • no-one knowing who had won until a couple of days later

In

  • new technology – trackers so we could pinpoint all teams

Observing team progress in real time

  • bases doing arrival and departure times and scoring on spreadsheets (just needing to ensure separating numbers with colons!)
  • communication with Bases using WhatsApp
  • all routes leading to Checkpoint Zulu
  • announce winners when all teams had finished

Base HQ highlights were:

  • following one team going the wrong way around, accumulating a lot of negative points
  • following the trackers on a big screen in real time
  • seeing where the Network team went for lunch!
  • going out and about visiting the bases and seeing the teams enjoying the day

If you were taking part – as a leader of a team, Base Commander or participant – what were your highlights? E-mail us: dayprowl@richmondscouts.org.uk Also, let us know how we could improve Day Prowl for next time – hopefully next year.
